vol. 2 ISHII x WATANABE

webgame creator interview vol.1 Yoshio ISHII

4 - Web games have a great potential - The future of the web games

There are a lot of web-game creators who have made brilliant games. We conduct interviews with those web-game creators. It will be interesting to hear how they come up with the ideas and how they integrate the ideas into one game. We'll also ask them about their motivators and their future plans.

The forth entry is about retail games and free web games. FromSoftware is releasing a game called Onore no Shinzuru Michi wo Yuke which borrows the idea from one of the great web games called Cursor*10. We have interviewed the Cursor*10" creator ISHII Yoshio from NEKOGAMES and WATANABE Kouichi from Silicon Studio, the developer of Onore no Shinzuru Michi wo Yuke.

In the interview, they have describe how they got to work together and what they think of each other. They also talk about the future of the web games and the retail games.
We hope you enjoy reading the interview.

HOSHINO

This time, we'd like to talk about the future of the web games including how the web games and the creators will work with the world.

WATANABE

Wow, with the world! Well, I hope the international players will love Onore no Shinzuru Michi wo Yuke.

HOSHINO

That's a tricky answer! But, it's true that a lot of international players love Cursor*10.

ISHII

Actually, the international players love Cursor*10 more than Japanese players do.

HOSHINO

The international markets have a lot of places to introduce good web games and creators to the audience, such as CasualGameplay and IndieGames.com. The Japanese market does not have such places though. We Japanese think these web games, or indie games, are just free games. People don't think "web game" is one of the genres. They usually don't think a web game is actually a work of someone either.

WATANABE

If there were no interviews with 0stage, we didn't think to make Onore no Shinzuru Michi wo Yuke. I hope this will make a positive impact on the future of the web games. The web games have great potential. The creators of those good web games should have more opportunities to make more games. Moreover, I hope we could do something to increase the number of the web game creators with great potential.

HOSHINO

This might sound like I'm a status-seeker or money-seeker, but if more people play the web games, the creator can earn money and be famous.

WATANABE

In that sense, nekogames should put some ads of Onore no Shinzuru Michi wo Yuke on their web page so that more people would recognize the game!

ISHII

Sure, I will. Shall I make Cursor*10 2 too?

HOSHINO

That's a good idea! I want to play!

ISHII

I already exchanged the New Year's greeting message to the ad of Onore no Shinzuru Michi wo Yuke. (laugh)

HOSHINO

Is that all? Please make a new one! (laugh) Oh well, this is fun. We are leaving high expectations to the readers. It's been very interesting talking with you today. Thank you very much.

HOSHINO

By the way, I was surprised to see the videos like Sugar Cubes on the nekogames' web site. You must have some reasons for this.

ISHII

Takahirou-san suddenly made a film and now people call him "director". I wanted people to call me director too...

WATANABE, HOSHINO

(laugh) Sure, we'll call you like that, Mr. Director!
